Connor McDavid: Career Profile, Records and Stats of Hockey’s Superstar

Connor McDavid is the Edmonton Oilers captain and one of the most dominant scorers in National Hockey League history, with six Art Ross Trophies, three Hart Trophies as MVP and a Conn Smythe Trophy to his name. Since arriving in the NHL in 2015 as the most hyped prospect in a generation, he has repeatedly led the league in points and has made the Oilers perennial contenders. This profile covers his early years, his biggest seasons, his records and what is left on his to-do list.

Who Is Connor McDavid?

Connor McDavid was born on 13 January 1997 in Richmond Hill, Ontario, and grew up in the nearby town of Newmarket. He is a centre who shoots left and is known above all for his skating: few players in the sport’s history have combined his top speed, acceleration and ability to handle the puck at full stride. He has won the Fastest Skater competition at NHL All-Star weekend several times.

He has played his entire NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers, who made him their captain in October 2016. At 19 years and 266 days old, he became the youngest captain in NHL history.

How Did McDavid Become a Junior Hockey Star?

McDavid’s talent was obvious early. In 2012, Hockey Canada granted him exceptional player status, allowing him to enter the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) at 15, a year earlier than normal. He was only the third player to receive that status.

Playing for the Erie Otters, he was named OHL rookie of the year in 2013 and in his final junior season, 2014-15, scored 44 goals and 120 points in just 47 games despite missing several weeks with a broken hand. He was named Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year and helped Canada win gold at the 2015 World Junior Championship.

When Was McDavid Drafted?

The Oilers selected McDavid first overall in the 2015 NHL Draft, after winning the draft lottery. He made his debut in October 2015. A broken collarbone cost him 37 games of his rookie season, but he still finished with 48 points in 45 games and was a finalist for rookie of the year.

What Are McDavid’s Biggest Achievements?

His trophy cabinet is already among the fullest of any active player:

  • Art Ross Trophy (six): as the NHL’s leading scorer in 2016-17, 2017-18, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2025-26, tying Gordie Howe and Mario Lemieux for the second-most scoring titles in league history.
  • Hart Trophy (three): NHL MVP in 2016-17, 2020-21 and 2022-23; the 2021 award was unanimous.
  • Ted Lindsay Award (five): voted the league’s most outstanding player by fellow players, tying Wayne Gretzky’s record in June 2026.
  • Rocket Richard Trophy: top goalscorer in 2022-23 with 64 goals.
  • Conn Smythe Trophy: playoff MVP in 2024, despite Edmonton losing the Stanley Cup Final.

His 2022-23 season was historic: 64 goals and 153 points, the highest single-season points total since the mid-1990s. In 2023-24 he became only the fourth player, after Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr, to record 100 assists in a season.

What Happened in the Stanley Cup Finals?

The Stanley Cup remains the one major prize McDavid has not won. In 2024 the Oilers fell behind 3-0 to the Florida Panthers in the Final, fought back to force a Game 7 and lost it 2-1. McDavid set a record for assists in a single playoff run (34 that year) and became the first skater from a losing team to win the Conn Smythe Trophy since Reggie Leach in 1976.

The two teams met again in the 2025 Final, and Florida won again, this time in six games. In 2026 Edmonton’s playoff run ended in the first round against the Anaheim Ducks, who won the series 4-2.

How Did McDavid Do at the 2026 Winter Olympics?

The Milano Cortina 2026 Games were the first Olympics with full NHL participation since 2014, giving McDavid his first chance to play at the Olympics. He led the tournament with 13 points in six games, according to Olympics.com, and took over as Canada’s captain after Sidney Crosby was injured during the tournament. He also set a record for the most points by an NHL player at a single Olympics.

Canada reached the gold medal game but lost 2-1 to the United States, taking silver. McDavid was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Best Forward, according to Olympics.com and the International Ice Hockey Federation.

What Are McDavid’s Career Stats?

By the end of the 2025-26 regular season, McDavid had played 794 NHL games and scored 409 goals and 811 assists for 1,220 points, according to Hockey-Reference. That works out to more than 1.5 points per game, a rate matched over a long career by only a handful of players in NHL history.

His 2025-26 season was one of his best: 48 goals and 90 assists for 138 points in all 82 games, leading the league in points and assists. He recorded a point in every one of Edmonton’s 41 wins and put together a 20-game point streak.

What Is McDavid’s Contract?

McDavid signed an eight-year, $100 million contract extension with the Oilers in July 2017, which ran from 2018-19 through 2025-26. On 6 October 2025 he agreed a two-year extension worth an average of $12.5 million a season, keeping him in Edmonton through the 2027-28 season. The deal was widely seen as team-friendly, leaving the Oilers more room under the salary cap to build a contender around him.

How Is His 2026-27 Season Going?

He has started at a record pace. On 21 October 2026 McDavid became the fastest player in NHL history to reach 20 assists in a season, doing it in his ninth game. In the next game he broke Mario Lemieux’s record for the most assists in a season’s first ten games, with 23.

The big questions for 2026-27 are whether he can win a seventh Art Ross Trophy, which would leave him second only to Wayne Gretzky’s ten, and whether Edmonton can finally turn regular-season dominance into a Stanley Cup.

What Makes McDavid So Good?

Coaches and analysts usually point to three things. First, his speed with the puck: he can accelerate past defenders while keeping full control, forcing opponents to back off and giving him time and space. Second, his vision and passing, reflected in his assist totals; he often creates chances for linemates such as Leon Draisaitl, one of the league’s best goalscorers. Third, his consistency: he has topped 100 points in most full seasons of his career.

How Does McDavid Compare With Other Greats?

Comparisons with Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux are inevitable, and McDavid’s points-per-game rate sits just behind theirs in the modern record books. What separates him from them, for now, is the Stanley Cup: Gretzky won four with Edmonton and Lemieux two with Pittsburgh. A championship would cement his place in the very top tier of the sport’s history.

Off the ice, McDavid has kept a low public profile. He is a regular face of the league’s marketing and has appeared on the cover of EA Sports’ NHL video game several times.
