How the NBA Season Works: Schedule, NBA Cup, Play-In and Playoffs
The NBA season is a six-month, 82-game regular season, followed by a play-in tournament and four rounds of best-of-seven playoffs that end with the NBA Finals in June. Along the way come the in-season NBA Cup, Christmas Day games, the trade deadline and the All-Star break. The 2026-27 season tipped off on 20 October 2026, with the New York Knicks starting as defending champions. Here is how every stage works and the key dates to know.
How Long Is the NBA Regular Season?
The 2026-27 regular season runs from 20 October 2026 to 11 April 2027. Each of the 30 teams plays 82 games, 41 at home and 41 away, according to the NBA’s key dates. That works out to roughly three or four games a week for each team, including back-to-back nights.
The schedule is weighted towards rivals. Teams are split into two conferences of 15 (Eastern and Western), each with three divisions of five. Teams play division opponents four times and every team from the other conference twice, with the remaining games spread across the rest of their own conference.
How Do the Conferences and Standings Work?
Standings are ranked by win-loss record within each conference, not across the whole league. Division titles carry prestige but no guaranteed playoff place. At the end of the regular season, the top six teams in each conference qualify directly for the playoffs, and the teams finishing seventh to tenth enter the play-in tournament.
When teams finish level, the NBA uses tiebreakers starting with head-to-head record between the tied teams, followed by measures such as division and conference records.
What Is the NBA Cup and How Does It Work?
The Emirates NBA Cup is the league’s in-season tournament, launched in 2023. It runs inside the regular season, so most of its games also count in the standings. According to the NBA’s official explainer, the 2026 format works like this:
- Group play (30 October to 27 November): all 30 teams were drawn into six groups of five within their conference, using pots based on last season’s records. Each team plays four group games, two at home and two away, on designated “Cup Nights”, mostly Fridays.
- Who advances: the six group winners plus one wild card per conference (the best second-placed team), making eight.
- Quarter-finals (4 and 5 December) and semi-finals (8 and 9 December): single-elimination games at the home of the higher-seeded team.
- Championship (11 December): a neutral-site final at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
All Cup games count towards the 82-game regular season except the championship game, which is a bonus 83rd game for the two finalists. Players on teams that reach the knockout rounds share a prize pool that grows the further they go.
What Are the Key Dates in the 2026-27 NBA Season?
Beyond the opening night and the Cup, these are the dates fans circle on the calendar:
- 7 November 2026: the Denver Nuggets play the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Mexico City Game 2026.
- 25 December 2026: the traditional slate of Christmas Day games, among the most-watched of the regular season.
- 11 February 2027: the trade deadline, after which teams can no longer trade players for the rest of the season.
- 19 to 21 February 2027: All-Star weekend in Phoenix, including the skills events and the All-Star Game.
- 11 April 2027: the final day of the regular season.
- 13 to 16 April 2027: the play-in tournament.
- 17 April 2027: the playoffs begin.
The NBA Finals follow in June. Exact Finals dates depend on the schedule released later in the season.
How Does the NBA Play-In Tournament Work?
The play-in gives teams finishing seventh to tenth in each conference a final chance to make the playoffs. It is a short knockout, explained in the NBA’s play-in guide:
- Game 1: the No. 7 seed hosts the No. 8 seed. The winner takes the seventh playoff place.
- Game 2: the No. 9 seed hosts the No. 10 seed. The loser is eliminated.
- Game 3: the loser of Game 1 hosts the winner of Game 2. The winner takes the eighth playoff place; the loser is out.
The format rewards finishing seventh or eighth, because those teams need to win only one of two games, while the ninth and tenth seeds must win twice on the road.
How Do the NBA Playoffs Work?
Sixteen teams, eight from each conference, contest four rounds. Every round is a best-of-seven series, so the first team to win four games advances:
- First round: 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 in each conference.
- Conference semi-finals: the winners meet within the bracket; there is no reseeding.
- Conference finals: the last two teams in each conference play for the Eastern and Western titles.
- NBA Finals: the two conference champions meet for the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
Home-court advantage goes to the team with the better regular-season record, which hosts Games 1, 2, 5 and 7 in a 2-2-1-1-1 pattern. That is why late-season games between contenders can matter so much.
Who Won the 2026 NBA Finals?
The New York Knicks are the reigning champions. They beat the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the 2026 NBA Finals, sealing the title with a 94-90 win in Game 5, and Jalen Brunson was named Finals MVP, according to NBA.com. It was the Knicks’ first championship since 1973.
The Western Conference remains fiercely competitive. Oklahoma City, led by two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, won the 2025 title before losing a Game 7 to the Spurs in the 2026 Western Conference finals. Read our career profile of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for more on the league’s reigning MVP.
How Are NBA Awards Decided?
The major regular-season awards, including Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year, Most Improved Player and Clutch Player of the Year, are voted on by a panel of media members after the regular season ends. Under the league’s player participation rules, players generally need to appear in at least 65 games to be eligible for most of these awards, which has made availability a bigger part of the MVP debate.
The NBA Cup has its own MVP and All-Tournament Team, chosen by a media panel at the end of the competition.
What Happens After the Season?
The calendar barely pauses. The NBA Draft Lottery in May decides the order of picks for teams that missed the playoffs, the two-round NBA Draft follows in late June, and free agency opens soon after, on 30 June. Summer League in Las Vegas then gives rookies their first taste of professional basketball.
How Can You Follow the Season?
The simplest way to keep track is to watch three things: the conference standings, especially the race for the top six and the play-in places; the NBA Cup group tables in November; and the trade deadline in February, when contenders reshape their rosters.
