How the Premier League Works: Points, Relegation and European Places Explained

The Premier League is England’s top football division: 20 clubs play each other twice, home and away, over 38 matches, with three points for a win and one for a draw. The club with the most points at the end of the season is champion, the bottom three are relegated, and the top finishers qualify for European competition. Arsenal won the 2025–26 title with 85 points. This guide explains how the league works, from tiebreakers and relegation to European places, and how to watch it in the US.

How Does the Premier League Season Work?

The season runs from August to May. Each of the 20 clubs plays the other 19 twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 38 matches and 380 games across the league. There are no playoffs or conferences: the table is the only thing that matters.

  • Win: 3 points
  • Draw: 1 point
  • Loss: 0 points

Matches are spread across weekends, with some midweek rounds, and the league usually pauses for international breaks in September, October, November and March. Unlike most US leagues, there is no salary cap or draft, so wealthier clubs can outspend rivals, though financial rules limit losses.

How Are Ties on Points Decided?

When clubs finish level on points, the Premier League’s rules separate them by:

  • Goal difference: goals scored minus goals conceded
  • Goals scored: the total number of goals
  • Head-to-head: points won in the matches between the tied clubs, then away goals scored in those matches
  • Play-off: if a tie still affects the title, relegation or European places, a one-off play-off match at a neutral ground

The most famous goal-difference finish came in 2011–12, when Manchester City pipped Manchester United on goal difference with a stoppage-time winner on the final day.

How Does Relegation Work?

Relegation is what makes the Premier League so different from US sports. The three clubs that finish bottom drop into the Championship, the second tier of English football, and are replaced by three promoted clubs:

  • First and second in the Championship: promoted automatically
  • Third to sixth: play off, with semi-finals over two legs and a final at Wembley, often described as the richest single match in football because of the TV money at stake

At the end of 2025–26, West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers were relegated, and Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City were promoted for 2026–27. Relegated clubs receive “parachute payments” for a limited period to soften the drop in income.

What Happened in the 2025–26 Season?

Arsenal won the 2025–26 Premier League title with 85 points, finishing seven points ahead of Manchester City on 78. It ended a long wait for a league title for the north London club. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland won the Golden Boot again; see our Erling Haaland career profile.

How Do Clubs Qualify for the Champions League?

The top four in the Premier League qualify for the next season’s UEFA Champions League, Europe’s elite club competition. Our guide to how the Champions League works explains its league-phase format.

In addition, UEFA awards two European Performance Spots each season to the countries whose clubs collectively performed best in Europe the year before. England earned one for 2026–27, so five English clubs qualified: Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool, with Liverpool taking the extra place by finishing fifth.

Lower European places usually go to the next-best finishers and to cup winners: the FA Cup winner normally earns a place in the Europa League and the League Cup (Carabao Cup) winner a place in the Conference League. If those winners have already qualified through the league, the places pass down the table, so the exact cut-off changes each year.

What Other Competitions Do Premier League Clubs Play?

  • FA Cup: the world’s oldest national knockout competition, open to hundreds of clubs from across the English pyramid
  • League Cup: a knockout competition for the 92 Premier League and English Football League clubs
  • UEFA competitions: Champions League, Europa League and Conference League for qualified clubs
  • Community Shield: a one-off pre-season match between the league champions and FA Cup winners

Top clubs can play more than 50 matches a season, which is why squad rotation and injuries play a large part in title races. Clubs in Europe also face midweek fixtures from September onwards, which can leave less time for recovery than their domestic rivals.

What Are the Biggest Clubs?

Manchester United and Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are often called the “Big Six”, because of their history, revenues and global fan bases. Manchester United have won the most Premier League titles since the league began in 1992, while Manchester City won four in a row from 2020–21 to 2023–24. In recent seasons Newcastle United and Aston Villa have also challenged near the top.

Who Are the Premier League’s Record Goalscorers?

Alan Shearer holds the record for the most Premier League goals, with 260, scored for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United between 1992 and 2006. Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney are next on the all-time list. The single-season record belongs to Erling Haaland, who scored 36 league goals for Manchester City in 2022–23, beating the record of 34 shared by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer from the 1990s, when the league had 22 clubs and 42 matches.

Each season, the league’s top scorer receives the Golden Boot, while the Golden Glove goes to the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets and the Player of the Season is chosen by a panel and a public vote. Those individual awards give fans another way to follow the season once the title race is settled.

How Is the Premier League Different From US Leagues?

Beyond relegation, the main differences are:

  • No playoffs: the regular-season table decides the champion
  • No draft or salary cap: clubs sign players through transfers, buying contracts from other clubs
  • Draws count: matches can end level, and draws are common
  • Multiple competitions at once: clubs chase domestic and European trophies in the same season
  • Running clock: two 45-minute halves plus stoppage time, with no timeouts

How Can I Watch the Premier League in the US?

NBC Sports holds the US rights. Matches are shown on NBC, USA Network and the streaming service Peacock, which carries the largest number of games. Kick-off times for Saturday matches are typically early morning on the US East Coast, often 7.30am, 10am or 12.30pm ET, while Sunday and evening matches vary.

When Does the 2026–27 Season End?

The 2026–27 Premier League season is scheduled to finish in May 2027, with all 10 final-day matches kicking off at the same time to protect the integrity of the title and relegation races. The Premier League publishes the full fixture list each June and updates it through the season for television and cup commitments.
